Pinterest rewards tall images

The Pinterest feed is a grid of columns, and every Pin is as wide as its column. The only way to take up more of the screen is to be taller, which is why the standard Pin is a 2:3 portrait and why square or landscape ads from other platforms look small there.

Getting a clean result

  • From a square ad, add height

    A square placed in a 2:3 frame leaves about a sixth of the height free above and below. Background mode fills that with a soft blur of your image. Fit fills it with a colour, which leaves room to add a title later.

  • Crop only centred photos

    Cropping a square to 2:3 keeps two thirds of its width. A centred product photo survives that. A design with text running edge to edge does not.

  • Keep the main message in the middle

    Pinterest places buttons and labels near the corners of a Pin. Fit and Background both keep your creative centred, well away from them.

What is the best size for a Pinterest Pin?

1000 × 1500 pixels, a 2:3 ratio. It is the shape Pinterest recommends and the one the feed is designed around.

Can I post a square image on Pinterest?

Yes, square Pins are accepted. They take up less of the screen than a 2:3 Pin, so use them mainly for carousels or when the design needs to stay square.

What happens to Pins taller than 2:3?

They can be cropped in the feed, so the top or bottom may not show until someone opens the Pin. Keep important content inside the 2:3 area.
