Instagram is a vertical app
Almost everything on Instagram is taller than it is wide. Feed ads go up to 4:5, and Stories and Reels are full-screen 9:16. A square or landscape creative made for another channel leaves most of the screen unused.
AdResize reshapes the ad you already have for each of those spaces, so you can test vertical versions without going back to a designer.
Which size goes where on Instagram
| Placement | Upload this format | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | Feed 4:5 (1080 × 1350) | The tallest feed shape and the best use of the screen. Square 1:1 also works. |
| Stories | Stories & Reels 9:16 (1080 × 1920) | Full screen. Your profile name sits at the top, the call-to-action at the bottom. |
| Reels | Stories & Reels 9:16 (1080 × 1920) | Full screen, with the caption, audio and buttons over the lower third. |
| Explore | Feed 4:5 or Square 1:1 | Ads appear in the scrolling feed that opens when someone taps a post, so the feed versions cover it. |
| Landscape in feed | Landscape 1.91:1 (1200 × 628) | The widest shape the feed accepts. It is also the smallest on screen, so use it only when you must. |
Getting a clean result
Start with Background for Stories and Reels
Turning a square ad into 9:16 leaves a lot of empty space. Background mode fills it with a soft, blurred version of your own creative, which looks more intentional than plain bars.
Mind the interface on 9:16
Instagram places your profile name over the top of the frame and the caption and call-to-action over the bottom. Meta's guidance is to keep roughly the top 14% and bottom 35% free of text and logos. Fit and Background keep your creative centred, away from both.
Use Crop for photos, Fit for designed ads
A product or lifestyle photo with a centred subject usually survives a crop. A designed ad with a headline and logo usually does not, so keep it whole with Fit or Background.
Your images stay on your device.

Questions
What size should an Instagram feed ad be?
1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) is the recommended shape. 1080 × 1080 (1:1) is also accepted and is a safe choice when the same creative runs in several placements.
What size are Instagram Story and Reel ads?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 ratio. The same file works for both.
Does Instagram accept WEBP images for ads?
Ads Manager expects JPG or PNG. You can upload a WEBP here and AdResize will export JPG or PNG for you.
