A Story ad fills the entire phone screen: 1080 pixels wide, 1920 tall, a 9:16 ratio. That is nearly twice the area of a square post, which is what makes the placement worth a dedicated image.
Not all of that area is yours. Instagram draws your profile name across the top and the call-to-action across the bottom, so anything important needs to sit in the middle of the frame.

Turning a feed ad into a Story

A square ad placed whole in a 9:16 frame leaves about 22% of the height empty above it and the same below. That clears the Story safe zones at both ends, so your headline and logo stay visible.
Background makes it look intentional
Plain bars above and below can look like a mistake. Background mode fills them with a blurred, enlarged copy of your creative, a treatment people already recognise from Stories.
Crop only when the subject is centred
Cropping a square to 9:16 keeps just the middle 56% of its width. A centred product shot can take that. An ad with text running edge to edge cannot.
