Six placements, four image sizes
Facebook lists a long menu of placements in Ads Manager, but for image ads they come down to four shapes: a tall 4:5 for the feed, a 1:1 square, a full-screen 9:16 for Stories and Reels, and a wide 1.91:1 for link-style ads. Learn those four and you have covered the platform.
The table below matches each placement to its size. If you would rather not build each one by hand, upload your creative above and download all four at the right dimensions.
Facebook ad sizes by placement
| Placement | Upload this format | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | 1080 × 1350 (4:5) | The recommended feed shape. 1080 × 1080 (1:1) is also accepted. |
| Stories | 1080 × 1920 (9:16) | Full screen. Leave the top and bottom clear of text and logos. |
| Reels | 1080 × 1920 (9:16) | Same file as Stories, but more of the bottom is covered by the caption and buttons. |
| Marketplace | 1080 × 1080 (1:1) | Sits among square product listings. |
| Right column | 1080 × 1080 (1:1) | Desktop only and shown very small. Fine detail will not be readable. |
| Link ads and landscape placements | 1200 × 628 (1.91:1) | The widest image Facebook accepts in the feed. |
Reading the numbers
The ratio matters more than the pixels
Facebook checks the shape of your image first. A 4:5 image at 1200 × 1500 is as valid as one at 1080 × 1350. The pixel sizes here are the recommended minimums for a sharp result, not exact requirements.
Bigger is fine, smaller is not
Facebook scales large images down cleanly. Images below the recommended size are scaled up and look soft, especially any text in them. Start from a creative at least 1080 pixels wide.
Save as JPG or PNG
Those are the two image types Ads Manager accepts. Use JPG for photographs and PNG for graphics with flat colour, sharp text or a logo.
Your images stay on your device.
Creatives are processed directly in your browser and aren't uploaded to our servers. There is no account, no image storage and nothing to delete afterwards. Close the tab and they are gone.
Questions
What is the standard Facebook ad size?
There is no single one. The two most used are 1080 × 1350 (4:5) for the feed and 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. A 1080 × 1080 square is the safest choice if you can only make one.
Is 1200 × 628 still used for Facebook ads?
Yes, for link-style ads and other landscape placements. It is no longer the best choice for the mobile feed, because a 4:5 image takes up far more of the screen.
Do I need a different image for every Facebook placement?
Not every placement, but every shape. Four images (1:1, 4:5, 9:16 and 1.91:1) cover all of the image placements, and Ads Manager lets you assign each one to the placements it fits.
