The short answer: 1080 × 1350
The Facebook feed accepts images from 1.91:1 (wide) to 4:5 (tall). Meta recommends 4:5 at 1080 × 1350 pixels or larger, because on a phone the feed is a narrow column and a taller image simply occupies more of it.
Square 1080 × 1080 is the other common choice and is equally valid. Landscape 1200 × 628 still works but is the smallest of the three on screen.
The three feed shapes compared
| Placement | Upload this format | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Feed, portrait (recommended) | 1080 × 1350 (4:5) | The most screen space the feed gives an image. Best for mobile-first campaigns. |
| Feed, square | 1080 × 1080 (1:1) | Works in the feed, Marketplace and right column, so one file goes further. |
| Feed, landscape | 1200 × 628 (1.91:1) | The traditional link-ad shape. About 42% of the height of a 4:5 image at the same width. |
| Feed, carousel cards | 1080 × 1080 (1:1) | Every card in a carousel should share one ratio. Square is the usual choice. |
Converting an existing ad to 4:5
From a square ad
A square is shorter than 4:5, so there is space to add above and below. Fit adds a plain band in a colour you pick. Background fills it with a soft blur of your own image. Crop would trim the sides instead, so use it only if they are empty.
From a landscape ad
Going from 1.91:1 to 4:5 is a big change. Cropping keeps less than half the width, which rarely leaves a designed ad intact. Fit or Background keeps the whole creative and is almost always the better result.
From a 9:16 Story
Here the image is too tall. Crop removes the top and bottom, which are usually the quiet parts of a Story design, and often gives a clean feed ad with no extra work.

Questions
Is 4:5 or 1:1 better for Facebook feed ads?
4:5 shows larger on phones, so it is the recommended default. 1:1 is the practical choice when the same image also has to run in square-only placements.
What is the minimum size for a Facebook feed image?
Meta recommends at least 1080 pixels on the short side: 1080 × 1080 for square and 1080 × 1350 for 4:5. Smaller images are accepted down to a point but look soft.
Can I upload a taller image than 4:5 to the feed?
You can upload it, but the feed crops anything taller down to 4:5. Make the 4:5 version yourself so you decide what is kept.
